FileVault disk encryption is a powerful security tool provided by Apple for all macOS devices. Once disk encryption is turned on, a bad actor will be unable to power on your Mac and access your data without knowing the password a user account on your device. In situations where a device is lost or stolen, FileVault is your first line of defense to keep your personal and business data secured.
But what happens if you forget your password? If your Mac is enrolled with Addigy, Ntiva's Apple MDM, we can upload and store a FileVault Personal Recovery Key (PRK) for safekeeping that can get you back into your Mac. This process of upload and storage is called "escrowing" your FileVault key.
In some circumstances, we may need your assistance in escrowing your FileVault PRK. Please follow these steps:
- Click on SupportMenu in your menu bar (the cross icon) and then click MacManage. You can also open MacManage from your Applications folder if you prefer.
- In the search field, type in "escrow" to reveal FileVault - User-driven key rotation and escrow:
- Click Install and follow the prompts. Type in your password when asked.
Upon completion, your FileVault key should be safely escrowed to Addigy for future use. If you receive an error message, please take a screenshot of it or copy down the text and contact Ntiva support for assistance.
