Before you begin, you should:
- Back up your important data to be safe
To a cloud service like OneDrive or Box, or to an external storage device via Time Machine. - Restart your computer
- Make sure you have 1-2 hours of free time
Need to upgrade your computer to the latest compatible version of macOS? Head to System Settings (System Preferences in older OSes):
- From the Apple menu () in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings
- Click the General tab and then Software Update to check for updates
Your computer will only show you upgrades compatible with your Mac - use the Upgrade Now button to install the latest OS your Mac can run. If you don't see the newest operating system, your Mac may not be able to run it, or it may not yet be approved by your organization (major macOS releases tend to be deferred for around 45 days after launch).
If no major upgrades are found, you'll only see a list of available minor updates:
Click Update Now to run the available updates.
