Apple has introduced a new type of software update, Background Security Improvements (BSI), beginning with OS 26. These are available for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. These are considered out-of-band (unexpected) updates that address critical vulnerabilities and should be applied to your devices when detected. Like many other types of updates, these require a restart to apply.
To view your available BSIs, you can use SupportMenu - click on the SupportMenu icon in your menu bar and you should see a red badge for the available update in the top-right corner:
Click that tile to reveal the update - you can then click Update Now to open System Settings:
To manually navigate to the BSI, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements. There you'll see any applied or available BSIs:
Unlike other updates, BSIs can be removed once applied. Should a BSI cause any business-critical applications to become inoperable, you can view an installed BSI and click the (i) button to remove it:
To ensure your BSIs are set to auto-install, visit System Settings > General > Software Update. Click the More Info button next to "Automatic Updates", then make sure that Install system data files and security updates is turned on:
