Platform SSO is a more modern version of extensible SSO. Log in with your credentials once to register your Mac with your Microsoft account, and your local user account with your cloud credentials.
When you register your Mac with Platform SSO, you'll be able to sign in once with your Microsoft account, and the token you receive from successful authentication will be shared with the other apps you use. This means you can just sign in to Outlook on your Mac, and you won't have to sign in to activate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or even at the Microsoft website.
1 - Register
When Platform SSO is enabled at your organization, you'll receive a notification:
Click the Register button to begin. If you don't see a notification, you can find the registration workflow by:
- Click on the Apple Menu and select System Settings
- Scroll down and click on Users & Groups
- Next to "Network account server", click Edit:
- Click the Register button.
2 - Log in
- Follow the prompts to sign in - click Continue and then use TouchID or type in your password:
Next, authenticate with your Microsoft account, including MFA if prompted:
3 - Enable autofill
- You will be prompted to allow the Company Portal app to autofill your passkey:
Click Open System Settings to find the Company Portal item and click the slider to enable passkey support. If System Settings doesn't take you right there, you can manually navigate to this page in System Settings by clicking on General > Autofill & Passwords: - Once you've clicked the slider, you'll be informed that registration is complete in System Settings and in the Microsoft prompt:
- You can also confirm by navigating back to System Settings > Users & Groups > Network Account Server > Edit:
You'll see your Mac is now registered, and you have a Repair option available.
Some additional notes about Platform SSO:
- Platform SSO does not always sync your cloud password with your Mac user password. Some organizations enable this feature; others do not.
- You will still need to log in with your Microsoft account credentials periodically. Platform SSO shares an authentication token across your Mac, but those tokens still regularly expire and must be renewed.
